found this - but not easy to see exactly how it's done. Uses Macromedia Director 8.
(Now defunct prog since Adobe bought Macromedia) I reckon it's still available though.

this is the latest version of director - I thought they'd stopped it in favour of flash - but it's still going. Director 8 is probably available as a torrent somewhere

I really want to get a copy of this software that I can customise myself - use the painting engine side and have a program that will let me save the images without having to connect to their server... doubt they'll let that happen though...
